​All things considered,
​salary may never be objectively fair.

But it must feel fair TO US.


In career coaching sessions one of the topics often people want to discuss is how to have talks about their salaries without anxiety.

When it comes to salary, the concept of fairness can be subjective. At the end of the day, it is a market. While it’s difficult to create a universal standard, it’s crucial that we, as individuals, feel that our pay reflects our value and contributions.

This often includes:
  • Understanding our value: Know our skills, experience, and the value we bring to the organisation, as well as being realistic about it.
  • Seeking transparency: Most companies are not readily open about salary structures, but doing some research regularly, talking to people in similar roles keeps our finger on the market.
  • Recognising non-monetary benefits: There is a lot of focus on benefits - from hybrid workplaces, to canteen lunches, to team building events - that may not be equally important to all, however.
  • Ensuring equity: The pay gap is still pretty much a real thing, so it is good to remember that many biases may be at play and it is our task to bring them to the surface.
  • Being clear on what we want: Most of us will take both salary drops and significant boosts throughout our life. That is why being clear on what is important to us right now in life is important.
