Writing your yearly goals at work? Remember
to write some for yourself too.

All successful companies have some kind of yearly goal setting process on both organisational, functional and team level. When we do that we naturally  focus on milestones, KPIs and other aspects that benefit a role or organisation.
Research shows us that the goals we are most likely to over-achieve and that bring us the strongest feelings of fulfilment, are the ones that we are tied to things that are uniquely meaningful to us. In other words, goals that we truly desire.

You do not need to share them with anyone else, but ask yourself:
  • What do I want to experience this year? Can be anything - from first solo trip, to running a marathon, or finding a partner.
  • What habits do I need to build for myself? The only reason organisations achieve the yearly goals is because there are multiple people taking actions in the set direction. The same applies to our personal goals - we will need some consistent small actions we do every day, the greatest achievements come from aligned habits.
  • How can I prioritise my happiness? Play, joy, fun, freedom are just a few of the things we trade as we grow from children to adults because we ‘don’t have time’ as we often hear in coaching sessions. This is no less than tragic as these are the synonyms of life, of vitality.

I wanted to write this little post because I have always been fascinated by how much time and energy we dedicate to reaching team goals. And naturally, in the work setting that makes sense.

But we come first. Then comes work. Important to keep this in mind. Writing personal goals ensures we are investing in ourselves as a whole, not just the professional growth.

I like the idea of keeping fun and joy at work. How do we connect with that?
Oh, such a great topic. The thing is…
