Conflict at work is often avoided,
​

simply because we do not always know
how to address it in a healthy way.


Workplace conflict is common, yet often dimmed or avoided, especially when we lack the skills to address it constructively.

Patrick Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions of a Team model highlights that avoiding conflict leads to poor decision-making, reduced creativity, and a lack of commitment.

Jim Tamm’s concept of Radical Collaboration takes this further, emphasizing the importance of trust, communication, and mutual respect in resolving conflict.


Conflict is good for us. It is the opportunity to build stronger bonds. 
  • Healthy conflict: Both Lencioni and Tamm stress that respectful but fully open disagreement leads to better decisions and innovation.
  • Builds trust: Trust and conflict go hand in hand - we can not have one without embracing the other, both models show.
  • Promotes commitment: Confronting and resolving conflict helps teams align around shared goals, enhancing commitment and accountability.

Often easier said than done as conflict naturally puts us in defence - we do not wish to hurt others, and we do not wish to get hurt ourselves. So often we believe all is for the good of everyone, while we are actually simply ignoring small cracks that later will lead to what we call 'red zone' situations.
