Emotional intelligence in a team is key,
according to the Radical Collaboration method



Emotional intelligence (EQ) is one of the most underused skills in creating and sustaining healthy team dynamics.

Although other wording is often used, it is also central to Jim Tamm’s Radical Collaboration method. The Radical Collaboration framework emphasises that understanding and managing emotions - both individually and collectively - enhances collaboration and performance.

Key elements of emotional intelligence that boost teamwork include:

  • Self-awareness: This skill is by far the best key to everything in life. Recognizing and embracing our own emotions in their fullness,  helps us respond, not react, to challenges.
  • Empathy: Fun fact: what is the one thing that makes us go the extra mile for someone? It is relating, seeing ourselves in them.
  • Emotional regulation: We know that managing emotions during high-stress situations is vital. But so is the ability to hold space for others’ expression and not judging and resisting their experience.

Emotional intelligence is one of those skills that is hugely underplayed in the workplace. In year end reviews, we tend to focus on performance, KPIs and measurable results but research shows that people with high EQ actually make far better leaders than those who are productive.
