There are 3 leadership theories that may…
explain the differences between generations.


We have all heard it or even said it - ‘back in my days…’  as many of us have our ideas of what a proper learning curve looks like. The truth is, our understanding and expectation of leadership has changed through time.

  • The Great Man Theory (1820s) - Thomas Carlyle
    Leaders are born with innate traits, such as charisma and decisiveness. Older generations may subconsciously believe that leadership is rooted in natural abilities and leadership talent.


  • The Self-Made Leader Theory (1930s) - Gordon Allport
    Leaders are made, not born, Allport emphasized. Leadership skills develop through experience, education, and influence. Millennials and Gen Z tend to resonate more with this view, valuing personal growth, mentorship, and continuous learning.


  • Carl Rogers’ Humanistic Approach (1950s)
    Leaders are self-awareness, empathic, and foster growth in others. This theory aligns with younger generations, particularly Gen Z, who expect leaders to be authentic, emotionally intelligent, and inclusive, focusing on the holistic development of the team.


  • The Whole Person Model (used in leadership coaching)
    This model suggests that effective leadership must address all aspects of a person - emotional, intellectual, and ethical. This resonates with today’s workforce, who seek leaders that are emotionally intelligent, self-aware, and capable of balancing personal and professional growth.
