Imagine you are on a hike, walking towards the mountain peak.
You instinctively know that not every single step you take will be perfectly on track. You know that most of the steps will be more or less in the right direction as long as you keep walking, it does not matter if each step is perfectly on the right track. To think otherwise, would be a little bit crazy. And yet, we expect that very often from our life paths. Especially, as we grow a little older, we value certainty greatly. It seems like we have much more to lose. And to a great extent it is true. We often spend a whole lifetime building what we have today - the career, the people around us, the homes, the stability - did not come overnight. Taking a step into a new path is a double risk - putting on the table what we have built, plus the uncertainty if something else will be more fulfilling. It often takes a life event that shakes us, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job or facing a health condition that reminds us of the preciousness of experiencing joy over the experience of certainty. And we know this deep down - there is no such thing as a perfect one step. There might be leaps and jumps here and there, but greatness is created by taking multiple steps and trusting that moving forward - even with a slight deviation - is more meaningful than standing still.
