The magic of giving:
Research shows that givers
do better in life in the long run.

But who is a giver?

In his book Give and Take, Adam Grant explores the surprising power of giving.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, givers - those who focus on helping others without expecting anything in return - often achieve the most success over time. But who exactly is a giver?

Givers are not just generous with their time or resources; they are motivated by empathy, focused on building meaningful relationships, and willing to invest in the success of others. Adam defines givers as:

  • Altruistic in action: Givers freely offer help, knowledge, and support without the expectation of direct reciprocation.
  • Focused on long-term impact: Their goal is to create lasting value, even if it doesn’t lead to immediate rewards.
  • Empathetic connectors: They build trust and relationships that open doors to opportunities and collaboration.

Research shows that givers often outperform takers and matchers (those who give in exchange for something) in both personal and professional life.

Givers are better at giving selflessly and building communities, which may have some downsides in the short run and in corporate performance but helps them advance in the long run.

Makes sense. How do you avoid stretching yourself too thin, though?
Great question. Let’s look at burn out and giving.
