The magic of giving:
and why learning how to
ask for help
is just as important as giving it

Those that give freely to others - their time, their energy and support - seem to be doing much better in the long run. But how do we avoid taking too much on our plate and spreading ourselves thin?
In Give and Take, Adam Grant emphasises the power of giving to others, but he also highlights an often overlooked aspect of success: asking for help.

While givers are celebrated for their generosity, it is equally important to recognise that asking for help is a big part of building good relationships.

  • Vulnerability builds trust: When we ask for help, we show others that we value their expertise and trust them. This openness fosters deeper, more meaningful connections.
  • Enabling reciprocity: Asking for help invites others to be givers, creating a cycle of mutual support and appreciation.
  • We are not alone, and we do not have to be: Many high performers are afraid to ask for help because they believe this will affect the way they are perceived or secretly believe they must do it alone.

There is a lot of research that shows that there are two important aspects to giving - the opportunity to include others in the process - and the ability to take care of ourselves just as we care for others.

The last one makes a huge difference when talking about burn out.
