The changes we refuse to make,
will change the way we feel
until we decide to move forward

Often, we resist change, even when we know it is necessary. Although it is most natural to prioritise familiarity and certainty, it is also part of our nature to see progress and to seek adventure.
We stay in a place or in a job or in a company for a little longer than we know is good for us.

This reluctance to make changes often has an impact on our emotional well-being.

Simplified, but here is what we usually observe in sessions:

  • Uncertainty is scary: As simple as that, our brain does not like uncertainty - it means danger and threat, which is why we try as long as we can to avoid ideas about change.
  • Comfort in the familiar: Sticking to habits makes us feel safe - even when we have outgrown them - and it is the combination between this comfort amplified by the fear of the unknown that makes us talk ourselves into keeping things as is and even appreciate them.
  • Emotional shift is the last push: Living in this limbo of desiring change but talking ourselves into comfort, eventually leads to more and more frustration and stagnation. Seems strange but that last sense of desperation is what we sometimes need to bounce off in the opposite direction and pursue a big, transformative change.

While this is something true for all areas of life, I see this especially in coaching sessions around work and careers and also, relationships.

These are two areas where most of us seem to be less willing to take risks, even if we know too well, our happiness and fulfilment is the price we are paying.

I think it is natural because we all need money to survive.
We do, and also because of the stigma around…
