Physical health and emotional wellbeing - how are they really related?

Picture

It was not long ago that we as humanity were in the belief that the body is separate from the emotional world, or better said that our mental or emotional states may have some but rather limited effect on our physical health.

Today we know better.

Physical health and emotional wellbeing are tightly linked, with research showing that each affects the other in profound ways.

Let us take the examples that everyone knows - chronic stress, for instance, triggers the release of cortisol, which can elevate blood pressure, disrupt sleep, and impair immune function.
On the flip side, taking care of our bodies can improve our emotional state. Studies show that regular exercise increases endorphins, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. By focusing on both physical health and emotional wellbeing, we create a positive feedback loop—healthy habits boost mood, while emotional balance supports physical recovery.

This is why often getting movement when we feel down is the simplest quick way to help ourselves. But also why, it is super important to not hold and suppress emotions but to have tools and ways to release them.
There is great focus on creating good habits for ourselves in our personal life and in our work space.

Yes, many organisations see the value of work-life balance.

Indeed, and it goes a step further than that. Let’s talk about that!
