08. the role of genetics in wellbeing...

08.

How much of our health is actually in our own hands and how much is genetics?

Picture

Nature versus nurture - one of the biggest questions in psychology. Of course, it depends what exactly we are talking about but... the results of research may surprise you!

Genetics do influence our health, with studies showing that inherited factors can account for up to 30% of our overall health risks (CDC, 2020).
In fact, research shows that up to 70% of our health outcomes are influenced by lifestyle choices (WHO, 2018).

Now, you do not need to be a scientist to see quickly that the biggest power is within our own hands. The balance between genetics and personal control over our health is more complex than it may first appear, especially when we consider the field of epigenetics.

Epigenetics - the field that studies gene expression - reveals that environmental factors—like diet, stress, and physical activity—can actually turn genes on or off, influencing how they express themselves without altering the DNA sequence itself. This means we have some influence on how to shape our genetic expression through healthier habits.
For example, exercise has been shown to not only lead to the obvious health benefits but to also activate genes that help protect against heart disease, while chronic stress can activate genes linked to inflammation and aging.

Essentially, while we can not change our genetic code, we have significant power to influence how our genes behave, making lifestyle choices a key determinant of health.

That is actually pretty cool. And I feel like my life is pretty healthy.
And it probably is - for the times we live it. If you want to check…
