09. How to build good habits early...

09.

I feel like I have a pretty healthy life. Why do I need to evaluate it anyway?

It’s great that you feel healthy! It is better to build on a solid base than to try to fix and mend while your house is falling apart. If you want to double check if you are indeed on a good track, have an honest look at some of these aspects.

  • Know your pillars: The key areas that we know health is built on are good sleep, nutritious food, manageable stress, regular exercise, emotional wellbeing and resilience and social interactions.  While not all may be at their peak every time, all of them are very important.

  • Adapt to changes: All these areas are often a matter of habits but also may be influenced by life events. F.ex. a new job demands more time, less sleep; a move to a new place, loss of a person you love, etc. Be patient with yourself if you notice yourself falling off the track for a while and make sure to adapt to new situations.

  • Preventive health: Most of us can feel quite anxious about doing regular check-ins, especially when we have a family history of certain conditions like cancer, heart disease or diabetes. But preventative medicine is the one with the greatest impact. So do your checks.

  • Emotional expression: This is the one aspect we tend to overlook as we think that emotions - especially those like anger, sadness, frustration, have no place in the day of a well-behaved person. But suppressing and intellectualising our emotions makes them stuck in our body and tends to come back in a different form later.

Thriving is different from surviving, and we may need to every once in a while look at the choices and habits we have and ask ourselves - is there something else I can change that my future self will thank me for?

So how do we actually make changes - big or small - to our wellbeing?
Another great question - there are 3 things that are crucial.
