The FAB model - Feeling - Action - Belief
and how it affects our desire to change.

The FAB model is developed by Dr. Claire Maguire and is based on the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It aims at breaking the repetitive cycles between emotions and actions, especially when it comes to emotional eating.

The model consists of Feelings (emotions) - Actions (behavior) and Beliefs (thought) that interact with each other continuously. This model allows us to understand particularly why we eat when we are not hungry and why we make certain food choices in the morning versus the evening, for example. The FAB model allows for deeper self-awareness as a first step.

  • What we do - Action: we look at the behaviour, say we had a second serving of ice cream when we promised ourselves just one scoop. Or we were scrolling in bed until late in the night.

  • How we feel - Emotion: we look at what is the feeling we are looking to create - either pleasant like temporary relaxation, or negative like distracting ourselves from anxiety or feeling lonely.

  • What we believe - Thought: we look at the thoughts and beliefs this generates - like, I failed again or it was just a little bit, or I have failed before anyway.

Although just awareness about the patterns and the cycles between our emotions, thoughts and actions is not enough, it is always the first step to making lasting change.

Creating lasting change starts with motivation but requires commitment and discipline to make it part of our lives and our new identity.

Yes, many athletes say that discipline is what got them the results.
You are spot on, our next topic is on creating discipline.
