Understanding your WHY: The key to lasting health change

When it comes to creating lasting change in our health habits, truly understanding your
WHY is essential. Our reason why is not just the surface-level goal like losing weight or exercising more. It is the deeper, emotional motivation that fuels these goals.

The 6 Layers of Why is a framework that can help uncover these deeper reasons, allowing us to tap into lasting motivation for change.

Here is how to use this method:
  • What do you want? Example: “I want to lose 5 kg.”
  • Why do you want that? “I want to feel more confident in my clothes.”
  • Why is that important to you? “I feel better and more at ease at my wedding this year”
  • Why do you want to feel that way? “Because I feel more radiant, happy and proud of myself for what I achieved.”
  • Why is feeling proud is important to you? “Because I want to dance, have fun, and just truly live my life to the fullest!”
  • Why is living life to the fullest important to you? “Because I want to look back one day and say - I truly lived and I had an amazing life.”

Why being clear on your WHY matters

Understanding the deeper layers of your WHY provides more than just motivation - it gives your health goals purpose. When you are clear on your personal reasons for change, you're more likely to stay committed, even when the initial excitement fades.

A strong, emotional connection to your WHY helps you create lasting, sustainable habits.

I like this. Do you have any other tips on how to stay on track?
Yes. And it starts with our friend circle and our family.
