What exactly is wellbeing and why is everyone talking about it?

Let us start at the very beginning - what is this topic of wellbeing everyone seems to be talking about, and is it just a hype word.
The tricky thing about wellbeing (or wellness) is that we all have our own unique definition of what it means to us. We could look at dictionaries or even books of psychology but the definitions are not exact. In fact, they are often quite broad and based on either ancient philosophies or various theories.

Yet, if we have to draw a few common aspects… our idea of wellbeing always includes at least these 3 aspects:
  • Physical health and wellness
  • Psychological and mental wellbeing
  • Social and intrapersonal connections

What does wellbeing mean to you? What does it look like - is it feeling vibrant and full of energy? Is it a feeling of joy or content in your everyday life? Is it loving relationships, a thriving environment or a fulfilling job? Or is it a combination of all of these aspects.

What becomes very clear through coaching is that although we may not be very good at defining what wellbeing is - we all know rather quickly when we are NOT in that state.

Interesting. I have heard of Health Psychology, is this similar?
